Accountability Is Becoming a Critical Issue for Zimbabwe’s Schools

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Accountability, transparency and integrity are increasingly becoming central to the effectiveness of Zimbabwe’s education system, as schools face growing demands for responsible leadership, efficient resource management and stronger engagement with parents and communities.

For teachers, the issue extends beyond administrative compliance. Decisions around school resources, learner welfare, communication, professional conduct and the handling of complaints directly affect the quality of education delivered.

The growing emphasis on social accountability also places teachers and school leaders at the centre of a wider system involving learners, parents, School Development Committees, communities, government and civil society.

Effective accountability requires more than identifying problems. Schools need mechanisms to document challenges, engage the appropriate authorities, track commitments and communicate outcomes to those affected.

This approach is particularly important where schools face challenges involving staffing, infrastructure, learning materials, safety, inclusion and access to technology. Reliable evidence can help distinguish isolated concerns from systemic problems requiring intervention at district, provincial or national level.

The issue is also gaining prominence in professional development. The NESZ National Education Leadership Academy includes an Accountability, Transparency and Integrity programme designed to strengthen ethical leadership, governance and transparency within education institutions.

For Zimbabwe’s teachers and school leaders, the emerging message is clear: accountability is not separate from teaching and learning. It is part of the institutional environment in which quality education is delivered.

Learn with purpose. Lead with integrity. Transform education.
